ARTIST STATEMENT

My drawings are a takeaway from my first visit to Conc bui in 2023

Meaning, I believe is articulated through the connections we make between the present and our past experience. I photographed the upstairs rooms with vestiges of its past still existent, yet it was in a state of demolition towards a new function: wires pulled from the ceiling, sockets and switches dangling, pipes exposed, and as if x-rayed, the shadows of the sinks and cisterns on the remaining structures.  The fourth wall removed.  The scene existed as a liminal moment between its past and its future, my past as a set designer and my present depiction of the scenes as stage set. These are the connections.

These were really difficult subjects. It is interesting how when effected deeply by something, we, I in this case, appear to be unable to see what it is that interested me… I drew and drew and drew the subject and continually, to myself, failed to disentangle, to detach the theatrical from the subject. This subliminally is why it mattered. The theatre was lost in the representation of those drawings and was only made by inserting them into an imagined landscape. The represented within the imagined. A disconnect for the connected.
