DYSTOPIA

A group exhibition @ BHG 2019

ARTIST STATEMENT

When presented with the title Dystopia I relished the opportunity to explore my thoughts concerning impossible spaces. As a huge fan of the visual conundrums that M.C Escher presents in his work, I set out to create a space which, at first sight would  look like a simple barn-like structure. Yet, on second glance, one might find oneself drawn to something that seemed ill-conceived; perhaps a drafting glitch.

At the time, in 2019, I called it Kakotopia meaning, in short: undesirable and frightening. However, now, with the passing of time, my distance from the drawing helps me to see that it is neither undesirable nor frightening. Instead, much like a riddle it’s curiously confusing or dare I say…  a conundrum.
